KCAL-TV Captures 9 Emmys in Local-Award Competition

KCAL-TV was the big winner in the 52nd annual Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards, picking up nine statuettes in such core categories as live news, sports and special events. The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences ceremony was held Saturday night at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium.

The breakdown of Emmy wins by station was: KCAL with nine; KCOP and KCBS with five each; KABC and KTTV with four apiece; Fox Sports Net and Fox Sports Net2, two each; and Adelphi Cable, KCET, KMEX, KTLA, KVEA and L.A. Cityview with one each.

The Los Angeles Area Governors Award was presented to KTLA (owned by the Tribune Co., which also owns the Los Angeles Times). The station will broadcast a one-hour show July 1 at 11 p.m. featuring highlights of the Emmy event.

Comic Louie Anderson handled hosting duties for the night with a lineup of presenters that included Robert Stack, Diane Ladd, Corbin Bernsen, Steve Allen, Jayne Meadows, Fred Savage and George Takei.
