A big rig slammed into the rear of another truck Wednesday on the southbound Golden State Freeway north of Castaic, engulfing both in flames and killing a teenage passenger.

The crash happened at 11:11 a.m. near Pyramid Lake, said Officer Matthew Hill of the California Highway Patrol.

According to a preliminary investigation, truck driver Adan Q. Amaro, 27, of Los Angeles plowed into an 18-wheeler parked on the shoulder of the freeway.

Amaro was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Valencia with head trauma, a shattered pelvis and internal injuries, Hill said. After authorities put out the fire, they found the burned body of Amaro’s passenger, a 17-year-old boy whose name was not released.

The driver of the parked truck, identified as 37-year-old Michael Bogunovich of Gilroy, was not badly hurt. He complained of minor pain after the collision, Hill said.

Two lanes of the freeway were closed for about 10 hours as authorities investigated the crash and cleaned up the wreckage.
