IRVINE
Drivers caught by a camera speeding through red lights at an Alton Parkway intersection won’t feel the blow to their wallets just yet.
Irvine police are extending the grace period for all red-light infractions taped by a video camera that was installed a little more than a month ago at Alton and Muirlands Boulevard.
During the grace period, originally set to last 30 days after the camera was installed, drivers who have been caught speeding through a red light have been issued a warning in lieu of a ticket.
Irvine traffic Sgt. Denny Jenner said the warning period will extend up to two weeks to allow the police and courts to better coordinate their electronic ticketing system.
Once the warning period ends, motorists entering the intersection after a light turns red will be caught on camera and issued a $271 citation through the mail.
