LOS ANGELES COUNTY

CASTAIC LAKE--Skyler Sutton, Valencia, with guide Greg Glowgow, caught five largemouth bass to 10 pounds nine ounces on waterdogs. Glowgow later caught 12 bass to 7-7 on waterdogs. Top striped bass, 18 1/2 pounds by Jim Panger, Santa Monica. Some trout and bluegill.

PYRAMID LAKE--Largemouth and smallmouth bass are pacing the action and spinnerbaits are getting lots of them. Catfish action is fair too, and a few striped bass are being caught.

VENTURA COUNTY

LAKE CASITAS--Big bass are biting. Top catch, 12-12 by Richard Fry, Carpinteria, on a crawdad. A 12-pounder was caught on a crankbait. Top catfish was a 12-pounder caught on a crankbaits. Trout holding at 30 feet.

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY

LAKE CACHUMA--Trout are moving deeper but being caught at the dam on night crawlers and Power Bait. Bass are at the surface early (spinners, etc.). Some perch and bluegill (mealworms).

ORANGE COUNTY

ANAHEIM LAKE--It opened Thursday after heavy stocking of catfish (six tons). It’s safe to say fishing should be pretty good this weekend.

IRVINE LAKE--A nine-pound catfish was caught on squid and a seven-pound trout was caught on Power Bait. Overall, fishing is fair for both, and slow to fair for bass and crappie.

LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--Catfish action is fair to good, and a 10-2 caught on barracuda tops the list. A 9-8 bass caught by James Reck, La Mirada, on a night crawler is the best catch.

OSO RESERVOIR--Bass fishing has slowed but it’s still rated very good for fish averaging 2-3 pounds, biting on crankbaits. Catfish are biting throughout the lake and a few have topped 15 pounds.

San Diego County

SAN DIEGO CITY LAKES--A 10-2 bass was caught on a crankbait at Hodges Lake, where the bite is good. El Capitan and San Vicente are good choices too. Bluegill action is fair to good at San Vicente. Catfish action is best at Sutherland.

EASTERN SIERRA

Bishop Creek is the hot spot in this region, although those who don’t mind the hike are finding back-country lakes in ideal shape. South, Sabrina and North lakes are OK. In the Mammoth Lakes area, Crowley is great one day and slow the next, but probably the best bet overall. Fly fishermen are doing well with olive and black streamers fished near drop-offs. One angler caught and released a 21-inch brown. The basin lakes are all productive, and Rock Creek Lake is yielding plenty of pan-size rainbows on a variety of baits and lures. San Joaqiun River is great for creek fishermen using small worms and spinners. Fly fishermen are having a tougher time because of high flows. The June Lake Loop is OK, but few big fish are being caught. Several limits of pan-size fish were caught on Thomas Buoyants. A 7-4 rainbow was caught on a night crawler at June. In Bridgeport, the East Walker flows have come up, but it remains very fishable and there’s good surface action on caddis and mayfly patterns. The West Walker is running fast and only big pools are producing. Virginia Lakes are very productive for mostly smaller fish. Bridgeport Reservoir is fair to good for trout to about five pounds.
