A 49-year-old bicyclist remained in critical condition with severe head injuries Sunday evening after being struck by a car in Costa Mesa, police said.

Carl McConnell of Costa Mesa was pedaling north on National Avenue at 11:41 a.m. when he ran a stop sign and rode into the path of a 1956 Chevrolet sedan that was westbound on Congress Street, police said. The driver braked, but McConnell reportedly ran into the left front fender of the car and was thrown into the windshield. McConnell was not wearing a helmet, said traffic investigator Floyd Waldron.

McConnell was taken to the intensive care unit at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, where he remained in critical condition Sunday evening, said a hospital spokeswoman.
