Masry Considers Running for Council

Ed Masry, the Westlake Village attorney whose story is featured in the movie “Erin Brockovich,” could be taking to the limelight again.

Masry said he is considering a run for the Thousand Oaks City Council in the November election. The attorney said he won’t make a formal announcement until July 5. But he wasn’t bashful about talking about his chances of winning one of the seats held by Councilwoman Linda Parks and Councilman Michael Markey. Markey has said he will seek reelection, but Parks has not yet announced her intention.

“Obviously, if I run, I have every intention of winning,” said Masry, a partner in the firm of Masry & Vititoe. “I’m not used to losing.”

Masry has been an activist on environmental issues, most recently filing a $661-million lawsuit against the developers of the controversial 2,350-unit Dos Vientos housing project being built in Newbury Park.

Markey said he isn’t worried about matching Masry on the issues. But Masry’s successful law firm means he may have deep pockets to outspend opponents, Markey said.

“He won’t raise any money,” Markey said. “He’ll use his own money and essentially buy a seat. I don’t know if that’s good for the public.”
