A counselor for an Alzheimer’s disease support group estimates that as much as 25% of the residents of Leisure World have some stage of the illness, which causes memory loss.
Mark Fieldson of the John Douglas French Center in Los Alamitos says that accurate numbers on those afflicted are difficult to ascertain because the early symptoms often go undetected.
On Friday, Leisure World resident Anna Nelson will be featured on a Discovery Health Channel documentary, “Anna’s Story: Fading Memories.” The half-hour program, airing at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., chronicles a typical day for Nelson, 79, who has early stage Alzheimer’s disease.
