Foundation Donates $400,000 for Scanner

A $400,000 donation has put Glendale Adventist Medical Center one step closer to purchasing a new state-of-the-art spiral CT scanner.

The Henry L. Guenther Foundation--which gives mainly to medical, youth, humanitarian and community projects in the Los Angeles area--donated the money toward the $1.5-million scanner. So far, $600,000 has been raised.

The hospital will make up any difference so the equipment can be installed by the end of summer, officials said.

The scanner will be able to do tests in a fraction of time; for example, a chest exam will take 20 to 30 seconds rather than 5 to 10 minutes.

“For really sick patients, it’s a help if we can scan quickly,” radiologist Richard Chao said. “We don’t have to take time doing a [lengthy] exam.”

In addition, doctors will get better images from cancer and heart attack screenings, thus making for earlier diagnosis.

“We’ll be saving lives, or at least giving people a few more years,” Chao said.
