Preserving Wetlands

Share

* Regarding “Lawmaker Seeks Change in Wetlands Definition,” (Feb. 19): California’s coast is its most valuable natural resource, which the people of California demanded be protected when they passed the California Coastal Act in 1972. The proposed bill of Assemblywoman Denise Ducheny (D-San Diego) to amend the act would decimate many of its most important and protective provisions.

This devastating bill, backed by a coalition of developers, would seriously diminish the protection afforded to California’s few remaining coastal wetlands. Smaller wetlands would be filled routinely. Major roadways would be permitted to cut through coastal open space.

The people of California must demand the sound rejection of any attempts such as this to weaken the California Coastal Act.
