Both Kariyas Missing This Time Around

Share

There were two Kariyas on the ice when the Ducks and Canucks played Dec. 8 at Anaheim, the first NHL meeting between Anaheim’s Paul and Vancouver’s Steve.

When the teams played Feb. 23 at the Arrowhead Pond, only Steve was in the lineup. There were no Kariyas in action Thursday in Vancouver.

Paul was at home in Orange County, making progress in his recovery from a bruised right foot. He is expected to participate in a light skate Saturday or Sunday, Coach Craig Hartsburg said.

The Canucks sent Steve to Syracuse of the American Hockey League on Thursday.

The absence of the Kariyas, who hail from North Vancouver, probably explained the announced crowd of 13,918 in the 18,422-seat GM Place.

Defenseman Niclas Havelid received clearance to begin full-contact workouts with teammates. Havelid, sidelined by a broken right middle finger since Jan. 15, isn’t expected to play for awhile, however.
