Oil Museum Shows Vintage Motorcycles
The California Oil Museum in Santa Paula will open a new exhibit, “Rare Motorcycles from the Otis Chandler Collection” on Sunday.
Chandler, former publisher of The Los Angeles Times and president of the Vintage Museum of Transportation and Wildlife in Oxnard, has lent the museum nine motorcycles from his personal collection.

Motorcycle exhibit--An article Saturday incorrectly reported the opening date of an exhibit titled “Rare Motorcycles from the Otis Chandler Collection” at the California Oil Museum in Santa Paula. The exhibit opens Sunday, March 12.
“His pleasure is collecting and we just asked him for them,” said Anne Graumlich, a curator for the oil museum and other museums in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. “They are beautiful and historically connected to the area.”
Among those on display will be a carmine red Indian Scout that was originally owned by actor Steve McQueen,. who at one time lived in Santa Paula.
Also on display will be a 1919 Harley-Davidson that was used to map Death Valley for railroad routes and hotel sites before Death Valley had roads, Graumlich said.
Rare motorcycle photos, posters, artwork and memorabilia complete the exhibit.
The museum, located at 1001 E. Main St., is open Wednesdays through Sundays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free, but donations are requested.
