Revised Arena Schedule Is Minus Detroit

The Arena Football League released its revised 2000 season schedule Friday, but the Detroit expansion franchise was not on it.

The Detroit Fury was to have joined the Los Angeles Avengers and the Carolina Cobras as the league’s newest expansion teams. Commissioner David Baker said that because of the labor dispute that ended Wednesday, the Fury--which joined the league Dec. 1--did not have enough time to put a team together.

So the league will play this year with 17 teams.

The Avengers were scheduled to play in Detroit on June 23. Team spokesman John Tamanaha said Los Angeles will play at Houston instead.

Tamanaha also said Avenger Coach Stan Brock had hired his staff. Robert Lyles will be the team’s defensive coordinator, Terry Karg is the quarterback coach, Harry Justvig is in charge of wide receivers and special teams, and Derrick Burroughs will coach the defensive backs.

Training camps open March 19, with the 14-week regular-season schedule starting April 13.
