The California First Amendment Coalition challenged city officials to admit that they violated the Ralph M. Brown Act, which regulates open meetings for public agencies and local governing bodies in California.

City Council members and other officials received a letter, sent by the coalition last week, City Manager Thomas Mauk said.

In the letter, coalition officials demand that the city admit the alleged violation, commit itself to not repeating the mistake and take measures to open closed meetings in future when approached by an outside organization.

Coalition officials said the city violated the Brown Act earlier this year when it held interviews in January to fill a then-vacant council seat.

Mauk said the coalition’s letter is being reviewed by City Atty. Richard D. Jones, who will respond to the group’s allegations.
