The City Council told a local builder to revise its plan for a 90-home development before taking it to the Planning Commission again.

The commission last month rejected the project in the Mesa Verde neighborhood, but Standard Pacific Corp. came before the council with a revised layout, eliminating a gate, creating a right-turn lane on Adams Avenue and Mesa Verde East and eliminating a home from the plan to create more open space.

But some council members and more than two dozen homeowners said Monday that the changes did not address the neighborhood’s greatest concern: the density of homes.

Mesa Verde residents told the commission last month that such a gated development would not fit the character of the neighborhood. They complained that the project would flood the streets with cars and pack its nearest school, Adams Elementary, with too many pupils.

Developers objected and said the project wouldn’t be profitable with fewer homes. Scott D. Stowell, president of Standard Pacific asked the council late Friday evening to hold off on discussing the project. On Monday, the council directed the company to do a redesign with fewer homes before resubmitting to the Planning Commission, which is scheduled to discuss the project at its April 10 meeting.
