Despite lifesaving attempts by paramedics and a school nurse, a 13-year-old girl at the Sherman Oaks Center for Enriched Studies died Tuesday afternoon after collapsing during the lunch period, school and city officials said.

The cause of death is unknown and an autopsy will be conducted on the 8th-grade student, said Shel Erlich, a spokesman with the Los Angeles Unified School District.

The girl’s name was not being released Tuesday night, officials said.

When city paramedics arrived at that school around 12:40 p.m., the student was unconscious and without a pulse, said Bob Collis, a spokesman with the Los Angeles Fire Department.

In front of a group of staff and students, Collis said the nurse and two paramedics tried to revive the girl. Paramedics continued to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation as the girl was transported to Tarzana Hospital, where she was pronounced dead upon arrival.

A crisis team will be at the school today to assist staff and students, officials said.
