Banker Silverio Robledo is the new mayor of San Fernando.

The City Council, at a meeting Monday night, unanimously selected Robledo, who for the last year served as mayor pro tem under Jose Hernandez.

The 36-year-old Wells Fargo loan officer has been a San Fernando councilman since 1997. He grew up in the San Fernando Valley and graduated from Cal State Northridge before obtaining a master’s degree in business administration from UCLA.

Robledo said economic development is his first priority for the 2.5-square-mile city, which has no movie theater or big chain discount store.

“We need to encourage development,” he said. “We need to bring big retailers to our area.”

In his year as mayor, Robledo said he plans to oversee the development of the San Fernando swap meet property and a movie multiplex / retail development in the downtown area.

“The swap meet development will break ground during my mayoral term,” he said.

He added that the multiplex project could take longer because the city needs to agree on a developer and official bids probably won’t start coming in until this summer.
