Autopsy on Girl Who Died at School Is Inconclusive
An autopsy done on the 13-year-old girl who collapsed and died this week at the Sherman Oaks Center for Enriched Studies was inconclusive, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County coroner’s office said Thursday.
“Additional studies will be done because we really didn’t see anything significant,” said coroner’s spokesman Scott Carrier.
The tests will include neuropathology studies, of the brain and spinal cord, and a toxicology test, Carrier said. “They’re just routine studies we do every time a teenager or young person collapses for no particular reason,” he said.
Carrier said the tests could take six to eight weeks and may not reveal the cause of eighth-grader Vanessa Escobedo’s death, but added “there is nothing suspicious at all about this case.”
Escobedo, of Sylmar, collapsed about 12:20 p.m. Tuesday just outside the lunch area at the Reseda campus. Fellow students described a disturbing scene in which she lay on the ground, turning purple while a nurse tended to her and schoolmates prayed.
