Man Held After High-Speed Chase, Freeway Standoff
A man who led police on a chase and then got out of his car and sat on a wall of a 300-foot-high freeway overpass surrendered Friday morning after an eight-hour standoff.
There was gridlock for miles around the closed Century and Harbor freeway interchange in South Los Angeles while police negotiators talked to the man. He surrendered at 9:20 a.m., Sheriff’s Deputy Steve Flamm said.
The man’s name was not released.
Deputies were called to the Rowland Heights area 20 miles east of the interchange about 12:26 a.m. with a report that the man was armed and had stolen his ex-girlfriend’s car, said Officer Rosa Ray of the California Highway Patrol.
The man was chased at speeds reaching 90 mph before the car stopped at 12:48 a.m. at the junction of the Harbor and Century freeways.
The man straddled the ramp’s three-foot concrete barrier that prevents cars from plunging 300 feet to the ground.
The man only spoke Vietnamese, which hampered early negotiation attempts.
