Acquisition of Jonsson Adds Depth

Share

The Ducks, looking for immediate help at center, acquired Jorgen Jonsson from the New York Islanders on Saturday for Johan Davidsson and future considerations, which probably will be a draft pick.

Jonsson, 27, had 11 goals and 28 points in 68 games with the Islanders this season. General Manager Pierre Gauthier, who has been reluctant to give up young players and draft picks for an immediate fix, said the trade was necessary to help the Ducks in their drive for the playoffs.

“Now we have a little depth up front,” Gauthier said. “We got an older player because we want to win now too. He’s a good checker and reads the game well. He was sort of buried on the [Long] Island, but he has played well lately.”

“I’m looking forward to playing here,” said Jonsson, who made it to St. Louis on Saturday despite his flight being delayed three hours. “We’re close to the playoffs. It’s not like we were on the Islanders, where every game didn’t mean anything. It’s a fun situation for me.”

Davidsson clearly was not in the Ducks’ plans. He spent most of the season with Cincinnati, the team’s minor league affiliate.

Left wing Marty McInnis (groin strain) and defenseman Pascal Trepanier (bruised left ankle) sat out Saturday’s game because of injuries. McInnis sat out 11 games recently because of a groin strain.

“It hasn’t felt 100% for a long time,” McInnis said. “It’s at the point now where I can’t skate.”

Trepanier, who was injured during practice Thursday, was put on injured reserve.

Meanwhile, defenseman Niclas Havelid, out since Jan. 14 because of a broken middle finger on his right hand, was assigned to Cincinnati for conditioning. Gauthier said Havelid would be evaluated after the weekend.

The status of goalie Guy Hebert will be known today, but Duck officials did not think Hebert had a concussion after being slammed into the net in overtime.
