Hit Batter in the 10th Lifts Cal Past Titans

Cal State Fullerton reliever Kirk Saarloos hit California’s Tommy Callen with a pitch in the bottom of the 10th with the bases loaded and a full count, giving the Bears a 6-5 victory in a nonconference baseball game Saturday in Berkeley.

First baseman Aaron Rifkin had four hits and four runs batted in for Fullerton (8-7), ranked third in the nation. Rifkin hit a two-run single in the first and a two-run home run in the seventh.

David Cash (3-1) was the winning pitcher for the Bears (9-12) and catcher Mike Tonis had two hits and two RBIs for Cal. Tonis and Clint Hoover hit back-to-back home runs in the third for Cal.

In Big West Conference softball:

Cal State Fullerton 1-9, Sacramento State 0-3--Brenda Iglesias hit a pinch-hit home run in the bottom of the sixth and Jodie Cox (9-0) pitched a three-hitter for the Titans in the first game.

The Titans (21-2, 2-0) had 12 hits in the second game, including home runs by Cox and Amanda Hockett. Gina Oaks pitched a complete game with 11 strikeouts for Fullerton.

In Golden State Athletic Conference softball:

Concordia 2-2, Vanguard 1-5--Nicole Lev’s RBI single in the bottom of the 12th drove in Molly Slane and won the first game for Concordia (9-10, 3-3). Andrea Castillo (3-2) pitched the 12th to pick up the victory.

In the second game, Vanguard outhit Concordia, 13-5, getting three hits each from Stacey Caggiano and Val Vanaken. Andrea Saucedo had a two-run double for Vanguard (12-9, 3-3).

Concordia got a two-run double from Dawn Davidson.

Hope International 2-1, Point Loma Nazarene 0-4--Leslie Graves drove in both runs for Hope International in the first game. Charity McMillan (6-4) went the distance to pick up the victory for the Royals.

In the second game, Graves hit a home run in the bottom of the first, but the Royals (11-9, 2-2) committed five errors.

In the Sun West softball tournament:

Chapman 8, College of St. Mary 0 (8, mercy)--Tiffany Hoskins (3-0) gave up one hit and struck out five to get the victory for Chapman. Amie Barnes had four hits and three RBIs for the Panthers (6-2).

Later in the day, Azusa Pacific (16-6) defeated Chapman, 4-0.

In nonconference women’s tennis:

UC Irvine 7, Temple 2--UC Irvine’s Maureen Diaz, ranked 47th in the nation, won in singles, 7-5, 6-4, and Jonni Seymour won, 6-1, 6-0. The Anteaters (8-5) won all the doubles matches.

In the Ben Brown track and field invitational:

UCI sweeps--Kareen Nilsson (17:17.95), Courtney Baird (17:52.15) and Allyson Kulak (18:05.80) finished 1-2-3 in the women’s 5,000 meters for UC Irvine.

Cal State Fullerton’s Brandon Campbell (7-0) and Paul Ruvolo (6-10) were the top two finishers in the men’s high jump.
