Woman’s Body Found Buried by Railroad Tracks

The body of an unidentified woman was found buried alongside railroad tracks Wednesday morning, authorities said.

Although the cause of death was undetermined, police believe that the victim--described as a black woman about 30--was slain and buried several days ago.

Los Angeles police responding to a call of assault with a deadly weapon about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday night were directed to the makeshift grave.

“They responded to a call from a victim of a cutting,” said Los Angeles Police Department Det. Bill Smith. “She related that the person who cut her also was involved in a homicide and the person was buried in a backyard.”

Officers found freshly tilled soil at a property at Compton Avenue and East 111th Street, near the train tracks. Subsequent digging by police and the county coroner’s office turned up the body early Wednesday morning.

A spokesman for the coroner’s office said the body’s decomposition made it difficult to immediately pinpoint the date and cause of death.
