A magnitude 5.8 earthquake, centered about 50 miles off California’s Humboldt County coast, shook some coastal communities lightly Thursday, causing neither damage nor injuries, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The 7:19 a.m. temblor was located about 65 miles southwest of Eureka in an area near the junction of great tectonic plates that is often seismically active.
