Marchment Suspended for Spearing Kariya

The Mighty Ducks got the justice they sought Saturday, when the NHL announced it has suspended San Jose Shark defenseman Bryan Marchment for three games. Marchment speared Paul Kariya in the stomach in the third period of the Ducks’ 4-2 victory Friday.

Kariya was not injured on the play. After Kariya spun away from Marchment along the boards behind San Jose’s net, Marchment caught up to him and speared him in the stomach in plain view of referee Don Van Massenhoven.

Marchment received a five-minute major and a game misconduct. He also will be fined $89,268.29.

Colin Campbell, the NHL’s director of hockey operations, decided against suspending San Jose captain Owen Nolan. The Ducks said Nolan kicked the feet out from under defenseman Pavel Trnka in the first period.

Trnka suffered a sprained left ankle that will sideline him four to six weeks, Craig Hartsburg said.

Niclas Havelid will replace Trnka in the lineup tonight against the Detroit Red Wings. Havelid has recovered fully from a broken right middle finger that sidelined him for two months.

“I’m ready,” Havelid said. “It’s swollen, but it’s going to be like that for the rest of the season.”

Havelid has a plate, screws and pins in his damaged finger. “They will take the pins out, but the plate and the screws will stay in unless they start to bother me,” he said.

For the record, Teemu Selanne has 35 goals in 38 games against the Sharks. The number of games was incorrect in Saturday’s editions.
