Titans Keep Rolling Against Pacific

Brett Kay hit a three-run home run and Sean Martin pitched four innings of shutout relief to help 11th-ranked Cal State Fullerton beat Pacific, 8-3, in Big West Conference baseball Saturday night at Titan Field.

Kay’s homer came in the bottom of the third inning with the score tied, 2-2. The Tigers (15-6, 0-2) scored one run in the fourth to make it 5-3, but could get no closer.

Matt Sorensen (3-0) went five innings to pick up the win for the Titans (12-7, 2-0) and Martin earned his first save of the year.

The victory was the Titans’ fourth in a row. The teams complete their three-game series at 1 today.

In another Big West game:

No. 20 Nevada 10, No. 8 Long Beach State 1--Nevada’s Joe Inglett went four-for-four, including a home run in the top of the third inning, and had two RBIs. Starter Darrell Rasner (8-0) pitched 7 1/3 innings, giving up eight hits and one run for the Wolf Pack (17-8, 1-1). Matt Paz (6-1) took his first loss for Long Beach (16-5, 4-1), giving up 10 hits and six earned runs.

In Golden State Athletic Conference baseball:

Concordia 14-5, Vanguard 4-4--Derek Patterson and Nick Swanson hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning of the first game for Concordia, which had 16 hits and led 11-4 after five innings. Rick Stockton (4-1) was the winner in the second game for the Eagles (15-13, 7-10), giving up six hits and one earned run in five innings. Vanguard’s Tim Jara had six hits in the two games, including four doubles.

In nonconference men’s volleyball:

UC Irvine 3, UC Santa Cruz 0--Ty Loomis had 17 kills for UC Irvine (9-12), which won 15-3, 15-8, 15-7.

In the NCAA Division I wrestling championships:

Hill takes fourth--T.J. Hill defeated sixth-seeded Jeff Ragan of Oklahoma State, 19-11, in the 125 pound wrestle-back bracket. Hill lost to top-seeded Jody Strittmatter of Iowa in the consolation final, 11-2, to finish fourth.

Iowa held off runner-up Iowa State to win its sixth consecutive national title, 116-109.5.
