A mile-long stretch of Doheny State Beach remained closed Monday after two sewage spills in eight days sent bacteria levels at the unincorporated stretch of shore skyrocketing over state limits.

The beach, which was already closed because of a March 12 spill, was hit again Friday when an estimated 12,000 gallons of sewage spilled into Oso Creek from a Rancho Capistrano Ministries church sewer line in Mission Viejo, said Monica Mazur, Orange County Health Care Agency spokeswoman.

In the earlier spill, about 21,000 gallons of raw sewage issued from a Moulton Niguel Water District pipe near Alicia Parkway.

Tests of ocean water at the beach showed levels of bacteria up to 125 times higher than levels safe for human contact, Mazur said.
