A car careened into a house in Lancaster on Tuesday afternoon, killing the 21-year-old driver and injuring four passengers, a sheriff’s lieutenant said.

Witnesses told authorities that the Toyota Tercel was traveling about 65 mph west on Avenue K when it swerved off the road near 4th Street East, barreling through a cinder-block wall and into the rear of a home in the 43600 block of Gingham Avenue, landing in the dining room.

No one inside the house was hurt, said Lt. Richard Lichten of the Lancaster Sheriff’s Station.

Los Angeles County sheriff’s investigators have not determined the cause of the accident, Lichten said, but do not think either alcohol or drugs were a factor.

Paramedics responded to the call at 5:15 p.m., Los Angeles County Fire Inspector Edward Osorio said.

The driver was transported to Lancaster Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Lichten said.

The front-seat passenger, a male thought to be 17 or 18 years old, was airlifted to Antelope Valley Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition, deputies said. The other passengers, a 16-year-old boy and two men, ages 18 and 21, suffered moderate injuries.

Authorities declined to identify any of the victims, saying their families had not yet been notified.
