Clinton Fans Rewarded for Their Patience

Ain’t no cure for the summertime blues, except cheap rock shows and we’ve got plenty ahead. On Sundays, you can git free rock ‘n’ roll, compliments of Kingpin, a new live-music night at Goldfingers in Hollywood. Also, Scream’s Dayle Gloria is bringing back Gaslight this Sunday to the Opium Den, with its three bands for three bucks motto. Things’ll really get heated over summer (with a free barbecue). . . . Speaking of hot stuff, George Clinton performed unplugged at the House of Blues Saturday. That’s right, that funky soul brother is legendary for working overtime (read: performing too darn long). But the House of Blues one-upped him by pulling the plug, leaving Clinton to perform acoustic versions of his hits. He was, of course, saving the best for last.

Some die-hard fans who stuck it out to the bitter end got lucky, though. (The former) Prince had reserved six tables for the show, but never turned up. I guess being one of the 20th century’s great musical talents means you’ve earned the privilege to be, well, flaky. So these fans, who were eyeing those tables all night, got the green light to plop their tired tushes on Prince’s reserved seats three hours into the concert. I love a happy end.

Speaking of happiness, if you saw Texas Terri & the Stiff Ones perform at the Dragonfly’s Pretty Ugly Club on Wednesday, you witnessed, quite possibly, the high priestess of rock ‘n’ roll’s finest hour. By the time she tarred-and-feathered herself (we’re not kidding), there really was no room for an encore. . . . Speaking of encores, look for the second annual Club Buzz Awards next Thursday. Our very own scene-queen statuette, Betty, will be awarded to the clubs with the most cake. We foresee major upsets. . . . Speaking of upsets, looks like it’s gonna be awhile before the 7969 club recovers from that fire. Those who need a Coyote Shivers fix (he was a mainstay at 7969’s Thursday night club, Vibrator) can catch him at Dragonfly April 5. . . . Lastly, deejay Sean Perry’s giving Beauty Bar some High Lights. That’s the name of his new Monday night promotion, where he promises to bring “you back to your roots.” Rad.
