All-Day Forum Set on School-District Split
Student achievement, parent participation and resource equity are among the topics to be discussed Saturday during an all-day forum on breaking up the Los Angeles Unified School District.
Advocates of several proposals will present their ideas and answer questions during the event sponsored by various San Fernando Valley groups at San Fernando High School, 11133 O’Melveny Ave., Pacoima, starting at 8 a.m.
On hand wil be members of the group Finally Restoring Excellence in Education, which is proposing to divide the LAUSD into two 100,000-student districts in the Valley. The proposal is under review by a county education panel that will make a recommendation in June to the state on whether to put the issue before voters.
Los Angeles Unified officials also plan to attend the forum to explain the reorganization plan put forward by interim Supt. Ramon C. Cortines. It calls for slashing the district’s central office and moving control of budgets and instruction to 11 new subdistricts.
Legislation on breaking up the district will also be reviewed, organizers said. Forum sponsors include the San Fernando Valley Mexican American Political Assn., Pueblo Y Salud and the West Valley Community Development Corp.
