The Julia Roberts human-interest saga barely beat out the martial-arts action film “Romeo Must Die,” starring Jet Li, which debuted at $18 million.

Meanwhile, “The Sixth Sense” became the 10th all-time biggest-grossing film with $290,288,427, squeaking past “The Empire Strikes Back.”
