“Appalachian Journey,” the recently released collaboration of cellist Yo-Yo Ma, bassist Edgar Meyer and fiddler Mark O’Connor, continues the pluck and harmony of their celebrated 1996 cross-genre exploration of Americana, ‘Appalachia Waltz.” Classical execution, jazz-like improvisation and the simple melodies of our rural roots come together when these three virtuosos take the stage.

Music by Haydn, Vaughan Williams and Dag Wiren, plus, of course, Mozart, makes up the program of the latest Los Angeles Mozart Orchestra event. Music director Lucinda Carver conducts; concertmaster Aimee Kreston is soloist in Williams’ “The Lark Ascending” and Los Angeles Mozart Orchestra principal Robert Frear plays the Trumpet Concerto by Haydn. Also on the agenda: Mozart’s Symphony No. 38, the “Prague,” and the Serenade, Opus 11, by Swedish composer Wiren.

11 pm: Pop Music

The London club experience comes to L.A. courtesy of dance duo Groove Armada, whose Tom Findlay and Andy Cato are making noise with their debut album, “Vertigo,” and a Fatboy Slim remix of “I See You Baby.” As with a recent appearance at the Fais Do-Do Ballroom, the DJ set will be supplemented by occasional live bass and keyboard, and lays the groundwork for a summer tour with a full band.

all day: Festival

California Lutheran University presents its 2000 Scandinavian Festival, a weekend of flags, anthems, traditional costumes and music embracing the cultures of the Scandinavian and Baltic countries. The celebration will also include dancers, arts and crafts, food booths, and a modern Icelandic art exhibit. Special attractions include a 16th century Swedish royal court, a Viking living-history program, special musical and theatrical presentations, and lectures.

7 pm: Party

As a design style, Art Deco made its big public debut at the 1925 Paris Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Moderne. That’s a mouthful, but all you have to know is that the Art Deco Society and the Lively Arts History Assn. are celebrating 75 years of Art Deco with a Speakeasy Soiree, a stylish party at the Hollywood American Legion building. There’ll be dance lessons from 7 to 8 p.m., and live music from Dean Mora and the Modern Rhythmists until midnight.

The granddaddy of all jazz parties, the Newport Jazz Festival, lends its name to this traveling ensemble of instrumental superstars that includes New Orleans-reared trumpeter Nicholas Payton, veteran trumpeter Randy Brecker, pianist and leader of Eastern Rebellion Cedar Walton, blues-minded saxophonist Red Holloway, swingin’ guitarist Howard Alden, trombonist Joel Helleny and others playing from the tradition of Monk, Miles, Ellington and Gillespie.

11 am: Celebration

The Los Angeles Department of Public Works and Councilman Nick Pacheco host a Clean Community Celebration in Boyle Heights, which will inform the public about numerous services such as recycling, graffiti removal and community clean-ups. Activities will include face painting for kids, free giveaways, refreshments, live music and folkloric dancing.
