Suspect in Nuclear Bomb Threat Held
An Oxnard man is being held for psychological evaluation after allegedly calling Vandenberg Air Force Base near Lompoc on Wednesday and saying there was a nuclear device on the base, according to Oxnard police.
Base authorities did not provide information about whether a search for explosive devices was conducted or whether anything was located.
The man, whose name is being withheld, walked out of his apartment in the 200 block of South D Street around 11:20 a.m. as a bomb squad of 10 officers arrived to search his home, said Oxnard Police Sgt. Marty Meyer.
The two-story apartment complex is around the corner from the Oxnard police station.
“If the guy had a nuclear device . . . we were concerned about safety issues,” Meyer said. “When he came out, the officers detained him, searched his residence and found nothing other than his wife in there.”
The woman declined comment shortly after the incident.
The man was taken to a mental health facility for 72 hours of observation, Meyer said. The investigation is continuing.
