The City Council is scheduled tonight to address the problem of sewer spills resulting from grease buildup in Laguna Beach’s sewer system.

The city staff is recommending the council prepare an ordinance for its July 18 meeting to establish grease control and enforcement practices for the sewer system.

City Engineer Steve May is recommending the city use a combination of traps to control grease spills and to use city staff to monitor the sewer lines.

Because most waste water from restaurants is from food preparation, the city is considering requiring restaurants to install grease traps to catch runoff waste.

The City Council meets at 6 p.m. at City Hall, 505 Forest Ave.
