Jones Steps Up to Leave Others Flat

Share

When Trevor Jones discovered the theft shortly after winning the open 110-meter hurdles at the Pasadena Games March 25, replacing the inserts for his training shoes was the least of his concerns.

The Newport Harbor senior also lost his letterman’s jacket, sweat pants and athletic bag containing his car keys, watch and cash. The articles were left on the infield near the starting line a few minutes before the race.

Jones took his frustration out on the 300 hurdles a few hours later, running the state’s leading time in the event (37.16 seconds), then spent the next few days trying to replace what stolen items he could.

The inserts, called orthotics, were designed to mold to the bottom of Jones’ feet, which are uncommonly flat, and work as shock absorbers. The orthotics were instrumental in relieving painful shin splints that plagued Jones for much of his junior season and limited his training between meets.

“When I stand, my whole foot is flat on the ground and my arch completely collapses,” Jones said. “If I stepped in the sand it would look like a hand print.”

Jones was delivered a new set of orthotics a couple weeks after the theft, but they were the wrong fit. Before getting the correct inserts last week, Jones went a month without, and the shin splints returned.

“I can already tell a difference,” Jones said of his new orthotics. “Even though it might be psychological.”

That edge should be enough for Jones and Newport Harbor to dominate the Sea View League finals Thursday at Irvine High. Jones, one of the most talented multi-event track athletes in the state, plans to run both hurdle events, the 100 dash and anchor leg on the 1,600 relay team. He is expected to be the first across the finish line in each event, earning huge points for the Sailors.

In addition to his specialty, the 300 hurdles, Jones also leads the county in the 110 hurdles and the 400. Currently, he’s also among the top three in the 100 and 200 and has proved to be the county’s most successful anchor on the four-lap relay.

Jones was the top individual performer at the Orange County Championships last month, winning both hurdles, anchoring the 1,600 relay team and finishing second in the 100. Jones, who holds school records in the 100, 200 and both hurdles, ran his final individual 400 against Aliso Niguel last week and posted another county-leading mark (48.9).

“I knew he was really strong in the 300 hurdles,” said teammate Doug Dukes. “All the other events, the 200 and 110 hurdles, we figured he would be a real strong competitor, but he has broken four school records. It’s kind of unexpected, which makes it really impressive.”

Although Jones didn’t do much training last season, he advanced to the state finals in the 300 hurdles, where he placed seventh. Jones had the second-highest finish among non-seniors in that race.

Jones is bound for UCLA, where he’s expected to specialize in the 400-meter hurdles. “I’m not too worried about adding two hurdles and another 100 meters,” Jones said. “What I also like is the last 50 meters is just sprinting. In the 300 hurdles, only the last 10 or 15 yards is sprinting.”

After league finals, Jones wants to continue running both hurdles right through to the June 3 state finals at Cerritos College. Jones also plans to run the anchor on the 1,600 relay team as long as the Sailors stay alive.

“We’re going to take the relay as far as we can go,” Jones said. “My other races are over when the relay starts, so that’s just a bonus.”

UNIVERSITY RECORD FALLS

University High held the national record in the girls’ distance medley for 18 years before it was broken Thursday by Felton San Lorenzo Valley at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia.

The event begins with the 1,200 meters and is followed by the 400, 800 and 1,600. Alejandra Barrientos, the defending state champion and national leader in the 1,600 meters, ran the final leg in 4:44.5 and completed the relay in 11:41.28, breaking the record set by the 1982 University team (11:43.56) anchored by Polly Plumer, a three-time state champion in the 1,600.
