Some Sweet Changes at Michael’s

Share
SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Pastry, Anyone? Pastry chef Darcy Tizio, most recently at the remodeled-then-closed Jimmy’s II in Beverly Hills, has joined Michael’s restaurant in Santa Monica. One of her new desserts there is a 21-layer chocolate cake, created in honor of the restaurant’s 21st year. It’s seven layers each of cake, ganache and chocolate-covered feuilletine (chocolate crunchies, to you and me). As for future desserts, Tizio says, “I’m waiting for the stone fruits to come in.” FYI, Michael’s has added lunch and dinner on Mondays. Michael’s, 1147 3rd St., Santa Monica; (310) 451-0843.

A Little Taste of Iceland: As part of the Iceland Naturally Festival, Theodore’s Restaurant hosts Icelandic chef Siggi Hall from now until Tuesday. His dishes will be based on Icelandic lamb and fish. If you’d like to hear a little Icelandic music, stop by the hotel’s Cinegrill on Friday or Sunday from 6 to 7 p.m. for the Bjorn Thoroddsen Trio. Theodore’s Restaurant, Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, 7000 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood; (323) 466-7000.

Blue Brunch: BluePalms, the restaurant-nightclub in the old Bistro 829 spot on La Cienega Boulevard, has just started serving Sunday brunch. Chef Eric Gay sends out his own versions of smoked salmon frittata, scrambled egg whites with grilled chicken and wilted greens and golden beet salad. Brunch is served every Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. BluePalms, 829 N. La Cienega Blvd., West Hollywood; (310) 652-9007.

Short Stuff: The patio behind Cafe des Artistes (1534 N. McCadden Place, Hollywood) is now open. Call (323) 469-7300 for reservations . . . . At 72 Market Street, chef Robert Roaquin has changed his oyster bar to an oyster and sushi bar (“American-style sushi,” he says. “Nothing too uptight.”), Along with that change, Roaquin has made the menu less French and lowered the prices. “It’s not as stuffy as it was before,” he said. 72 Market Street is at 72 Market St., Venice; (310) 392-8720.
