California Farms

* I must take issue with your April 29 editorial, “Encourage Organics.” I operate our family farm in the southern San Joaquin Valley. To attribute a tomato or a peach taste to organic farming is pure folly. A variety of reasons can be responsible for flavor--none of which are organic. Your facts are misleading, as rates per acre are down and products used are less harmful.

Commercially grown fresh fruits and vegetables from California are highly monitored and regulated by state and federal agencies--more so than any place on Mother Earth. Health-conscious consumers should consider the origin of the produce they select. While I do not discourage people from purchasing organics, to encourage them with misleading facts at the direct expense of California commercial farms is an ill-sent message.
