Police are looking for help from residents to extend the city’s neighborhood watch programs over the entire city.

Sandi Sandell, a community services officer in charge of the city’s citizen watch groups, said about half of La Habra neighborhoods have their own resident-driven neighborhood programs, but there’s always room for expansion.

“We have about 2,500 people involved in 54 groups,” Sandell said. “I would love to have people in the whole city involved.”

Neighborhood watch groups help familiarize a community with its residents, so that any crime problems or suspicious characters are easily recognized, she said. The groups also help establish trust among neighbors who normally don’t interact on a regular basis.
