Grammy-winning composer-arranger Joe Harnell (who wrote “Fly Me to the Moon”) has penned tunes for Peggy Lee, Judy Garland, Pearl Bailey and a host of others throughout his distinguished career. He’s joined by vocalist Janna Brown in an evening of songs sure to spur your memories.

After a stint as an Elektra Records artist and a member of the crew the Hieroglyphics, Oakland-based Del the Funky Homosapien is back in the role that suits him best: independent underground hip-hop artist. The rapper will serve up some selections from his new album, “Both Sides of the Brain,” when he headlines the House of Blues.

Deaf West Theatre, celebrating its 10th anniversary, presents its first-ever musical, an adaptation of Lionel Bart’s “Oliver!” The production integrates deaf actors using American Sign Language with hearing actors and singers. Broadway choreographer Jeff Calhoun directs, with George McDaniel playing Fagin.

“Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and Twentieth Century Mexican Art: The Jacques and Natasha Gelman Collection” charts a broad range of artistic movements, from Cubism and Surrealism to abstraction and realism. The exhibition, drawn from a highly regarded collection, will feature more than 80 paintings, sculptures and photographs by 20th century greats Kahlo, Rivera, Maria Izquierdo, Jose Clemente Orozco, Carlos Merida and Rufino Tamayo, as well as contemporary figures Cisco Jimenez, Silvia Gruner and Gabriel Orozco.

The tiny community of Monrovia, located at the bottom of the San Gabriel Mountains east of Pasadena, is the fourth-oldest city in Los Angeles County and has the architecture to prove it. View the area’s historic homes at the Millennium Tour of Historic Old Homes, which will make six stops, including the newly restored 1887 Victorian Idlewild House and a 1909 Craftsman in the early stages of renovation. The daylong tour will also feature period music, vintage cars, local crafts and refreshments. Proceeds from the tour, sponsored by the Monrovia Old House Preservation Group, will benefit the restoration of vintage homes in the community.

The largest festival devoted to Yiddish art and culture isn’t in New York or Europe. It’s in L.A. And it starts Sunday. Yiddishkayt adopted the theme “YK2--The New Face of Yiddish Culture” because the language is 1,000 years old--and celebrators want it to last another 1,000. Yiddishkayt--a biannual event--lasts all week, with performances at more than 20 venues throughout the county. Things start Sunday at Israel’s 52nd Independence Day Festival. On the festival’s Yiddishland stage, Cindy Paley will sing Yiddish tunes, and Tel Aviv-based theater company Yiddishpiel will perform. Other highlights: Yiddishpiel’s “Good Yom-Tov Yiddish” on Tuesday and Wednesday; choreographer John Malashock and playwright Karen Hartman’s “Blessings and Curses” on Tuesday and Wednesday; Jewish lesbian juggler Sara Felder’s “Shtick,” May 18-21; and klezmer music with Brave Old World on May 18 and 20.
