An award-winning children’s book, “Mirette on the High Wire,” is the source material for “Mirette,” a musical with songs by “The Fantasticks” team of lyricist Tom Jones (not that Tom Jones) and composer Harvey Schmidt. Set in Paris during the 1890s, Emily Arnold McCully’s tale centers on Mirette, a young girl who learns to walk the tightrope under the tutelage of Bellini, a master of the art who has become grounded by fear. First seen at Connecticut’s Goodspeed Opera House in 1998, “Mirette” is making its West Coast premiere in a production by the Fullerton Civic Light Opera.
