Man Wounded in Possible Retaliation Attack

In what police said could be an act of retaliation for the fatal clubbing and stabbing of a Latino teenager, a carload of young men opened fire on seven Armenian Americans Thursday night, wounding one.

The 18-year-old victim was shot once in the leg and was taken to an area hospital, said Sgt. Rick Young. He said the man suffered a minor wound.

The attack occurred at 9:33 p.m. as a group of young men stood on the corner of Kenilworth Avenue and Glenoaks Boulevard, talking and eating doughnuts, Young said.

A car carrying three Latino men with shaved heads pulled up and one passenger, seated in the rear, shouted out the window, Young said. Witnesses told police that a passenger in the front fired five to six shots at the group.

The attack came six days after Raul Aguirre, a 17-year-old Hoover High School student, was clubbed with a tire iron and stabbed in the heart outside the school. Police said he tried to intervene in a fight fueled by ethnic tensions between Armenian Americans and Latinos.

Police were searching Thursday night for three suspects ages 18-20 in a blue, green or teal Honda Accord.
