Three Artists at Armory

Maria Elena Fernandez is indeed a very talented poet and performance artist (“Fernandez and Friends’ Multiple Personalities Go on Parade,” by Dana Calvo, May 4).
However, the piece mentioned in your article, “The Chola, the Cha Cha and the Catholic School Girl,” was not a solo performance by Ms. Fernandez but a three-person collaboration. From its inception at the Armory Center for the Arts four years ago, the piece was meant as a collaborative piece, a chance to showcase the talent of all three poets. Three women together could expose the issues of stereotypes and sexism more powerfully than just one. However, the article relegated Linda Gamboa and Consuelo Flores, two equally accomplished spoken-word artists, to the role of sidekicks.
The article was not about a one-woman show, and your treating it as such was not only demoralizing to the other two poets but also inaccurate.
