Transit Needs of Families

Share

I am concerned about the special needs of families with young children whose only means of transportation is the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

On a recent bus ride, I noticed that special arrangements are made for people who are handicapped or who use a bicycle.

It appears to me that no special arrangements have been set up for families with small children.

On March 15, I accompanied a friend, her 7-month-old twins and her 18-month-old to a doctor’s appointment.

What began as a small favor turned into quite an adventure.

We arrived at the bus stop and waited. As we were waiting, the babies fell asleep in their strollers. Shortly afterward, the bus arrived. The bus driver informed us that we would need to break down the strollers. Not only did we have strollers to contend with, but we also had packages and a large diaper bag.

I was helping my friend; therefore we did not expect any other riders to help us. It took us 10 minutes to take care of the situation. In this time, the babies began to scream, and the driver became exasperated.

I understand that there are safety concerns and that precautions must be taken to ensure a safe bus ride for all. I am also aware that bus drivers must do their best to be on time and keep their passengers safe at all times.

I feel confident that MTA truly cares for its passengers.

It is my hope that this matter will be taken into consideration.
