Trustees Support 2 Children’s Museums

The Board of Trustees for the Los Angeles Children’s Museum has agreed to pursue construction of two new museums--one at Hansen Dam--to replace the current, inadequate facility downtown.

Board Chairman Doug Ring said the panel agreed unanimously to proceed with plans for the two “sister museums,” with different emphasis at each site.

“The board felt that in the long measure, this was an incredible opportunity for the museum and for Los Angeles,” Ring said.

The proposal for a new downtown museum, in the Arts Park area near Little Tokyo, advances next to the City Council. The proposal at Hansen Dam in Lake View Terrace goes to the city Parks Commission, which is considering an environmental study of the site.

Ring said the museum board will have to raise some money to match more than $12 million in state and federal funds. The group plans to build the museums one after the other to better manage the projects, he said.
