The City Council on Monday unanimously voted to quadruple the current $500 reward for reporting information leading to an arrest and conviction of graffiti vandals.

City officials said they hope the $2,000 reward will entice residents to take a stand against graffiti and make potential offenders more wary of committing the crime. A few years ago, Costa Mesa began offering $500 to people who called the Police Department with tips on graffiti cases. Still, many residents were not aware of the reward offer.

At Monday’s council meeting, a 22-year-old man was given $500, becoming just the second person to receive the cash reward.

Those convicted of vandalism must pay the reward. If the offender is a minor, the minor’s parents will be responsible for paying the fine.
