Saying a Little Prayer for Kobe Bryant’s Bachelorhood

Share

To paraphrase Jerry Seinfeld, what’s the deal with rumors that began flying around town Thursday about Kobe Bryant’s engagement to a local girl? Hearts are breaking all over the place (for examples, see postings on the Laker guard’s Web site, https://www.alleyoop.org/kobe.) Please Kobe. Say it ain’t so. . . . Or at least return our phone calls.

It’s pretty complicated: Time Inc.’s new magazine, Real Simple, which launched two months ago, is already under new leadership. Managing editor Susan Wyland, who came up with the concept for the glossy, which was supposed to help readers pare down their lives, has resigned.

Although Real Simple has been criticized for its dumbed-down content and underwhelming design, Time Inc. Editor in Chief Norman Pearlstine said Wednesday that the 400,000-circulation publication is doing well.

“Susan Wyland brought us a brilliant concept,” Pearlstine said. “We admire what she has done in developing it, and we’re grateful for her considerable efforts. Real Simple has one of the highest response rates from readers that Time Inc. has ever seen, and its newsstand sales have been equally strong.” The new editors of Real Simple are Carrie Tuhy from InStyle and Isolde Motley of the now-defunct Life. Wyland had been editor of Martha Stewart Living before she was asked to dream up a new publication: Real Simple.

Those of you who are mourning the death of “Beverly Hills, 90210” (the last episode aired Wednesday night) may want to hotfoot it over to It’s a Wrap on Magnolia Boulevard in Burbank. The resale shop acquired all the wardrobe items from the Fox show’s set, and they’re selling briskly, according to owner Tiara Hallman.

Customers, she said, “are going crazy because the show has been on the air so long. It’s a piece of TV history.”

The crush of shoppers looking for BCBG, Betsey Johnson, Quiksilver, Billabong, Donna Karan and Calvin Klein separates is not quite as big as when the store acquired the “Seinfeld” wardrobe after that show ended, but Hallman said it’s close.

It’s a Wrap is even stocking some of the “Donna Martin” label clothing from Donna’s (Tori Spelling’s) boutique on the show.

The summer movie season gets into full swing today with the opening of Disney’s “Dinosaur,” and this year it’s going to be easier than ever to pack on popcorn-and-candy pounds, thanks to a new product that helps moviegoers leave the concession stand with a full load of snacks--drink, popcorn and candy--all in one hand.

Berjis Innovation & Design is introducing its 2-POP Fun Packs in theaters this weekend. The stacking cardboard contraptions (which double as ad space for movie logos and artwork) are popcorn containers designed to sit on top of soda cups. A straw hole on the side of the package allows you to drink the soda without moving the popcorn.

While we’re on the subject of dinosaurs, does it strike anyone else as funny that Sue, the 67-million-year-old T. rex at the Field Museum in Chicago, is sponsored by McDonald’s? The world’s biggest carnivore and the world’s biggest carnivore caterer. . . . A match made in heaven. Can dinoburgers and Sue-string fries be far behind?
