Ed Weinstock; Public Health Physician at UCLA

Ed Weinstock, 63, a public health physician who developed and directed social service programs for cancer patients at UCLA’s Jonsson Cancer Center. While creating those programs, Weinstock noticed that patients had a great interest in health issues, particularly nutrition, and that there was a shortage of easily obtainable information. He urged patients to ask questions of their medical care providers. “Think about and write down questions beforehand,” he wrote in an issue of UCLA Health Insights some years ago. “Grocery lists . . . save many unnecessary trips to the market. Since going to the doctor’s office is far more crucial . . . it is worth taking as much time planning.” Born in New York, Weinstock grew up in Boyle Heights and attended local high schools. At UCLA, he received bachelor’s and master’s degrees before earning his doctorate in public health at the Westwood campus. Before returning to UCLA to work at the cancer center, Weinstock was with Planned Parenthood and ran health and social programs at UC Riverside. He went on to create a company, National Health Video, that produced and distributed videos in English and Spanish on a variety of health issues. At UCLA on Tuesday of a cerebral hemorrhage.
