A man wearing only socks was killed early Saturday after being hit by a vehicle on the Golden State Freeway, authorities said.

A northbound Nissan Pathfinder struck the 44-year-old Santa Monica man about 1:50 a.m., said Lt. Cheryl MacWillie of the Los Angeles County coroner’s office. The man was identified through fingerprints, but his name was withheld until relatives were notified, she said.

The man was standing in the northbound freeway near Sheldon Street when he was hit and thrown 30 feet into the fast lane, MacWillie said.

Officials did not know why he was on the freeway.

The death was ruled an accident and the driver was not at fault, MacWillie said.

Northbound traffic lanes were closed and reopened about 3:30 a.m., authorities said.
