3 Arrested in Fatal Gunfight

Police have arrested three suspects and are searching for others in a gunfight that left one person dead and five injured over the weekend, authorities said.

Members of one gang tried to crash a party in the 13800 block of Hubbard Street early Sunday when a member of a rival gang came out of the house and began fighting, said Det. Frank Bishop of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Foothill station.

“We see shootings like this now and then, but they never hit that many people,” Bishop said.

The rivals began shooting at each other, fatally wounding 20-year-old Joel Neri of Panorama City, Bishop said. Five other people were treated and released Sunday from area hospitals, he said.

Aurelio Navarro, 24, of Arleta, and Mariano Andrade, 21, of Sun Valley, were booked on suspicion of murder. Orlando Hernandez, 21, of North Hills, was jailed on suspicion of attempted murder. All three emerged from the house party when members of the rival gang arrived and started fighting, Bishop said.

Police believe more than three gunmen were involved, he said.

“There were numerous shooters on both sides,” Bishop said. “We had to request help from officers from other divisions to give us a hand. It was crazy.”
