As many as 1,000 people are expected at the event, which offers testing for bone density, glucose, hearing, glaucoma, blood pressure, HIV and sexually transmitted diseases. There also will be mammograms, dental screenings, chiropractic exams and free flu shots, while supplies last. Between 300 and 400 people will receive a free Asian lunch at noon, followed by afternoon entertainment by a variety of Asian dancers and martial artists.

Although the event is focused on Asians and Pacific Islanders, the entire community is welcome, said Elizabeth Wong, executive director of the Asian & Pacific Islanders Council of San Fernando, which is hosting the event.

“We want everyone to come and share our culture with us,” Wong said. “It’s a chance to enlighten each other.”

In the morning, there will be lectures on senior housing, transportation, health insurance and physical fitness. A children’s area with face painting and crafts also will be offered.

The family health and cultural day is planned from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the San Fernando Valley Japanese-American Community Center, 12953 Branford St., Pacoima.
