Mother, Teen Boy Struggle Over Gun

A 14-year-old Thousand Oaks youth struggled with his mother over a loaded 9-millimeter handgun Thursday morning, police said.

No one was seriously injured.

Sgt. Steve Bourke said the mother called police from her cell phone about 9:20 a.m. after she ran out of her house in the 1500 block of Uppingham Drive.

She told police her son had a gun.

Police surrounded the house, thinking the boy was inside, and then found the boy on the sidewalk about two blocks away, Bourke said.

The boy had escaped through his backyard before police arrived.

Police, Bourke said, could not find the weapon on the boy or in the house.

They are continuing to search for the gun.

The boy’s mother had minor injuries to her face, Bourke said, and the teen will receive counseling.
