$3.1 Million Awarded for Light-Rail Line to East L.A.

The California Transportation Commission this week awarded $3.1 million for a planned light-rail line connecting downtown and East Los Angeles.

“It will serve as an extension of the Pasadena Blue Line and be physically connected at Union Station. There will be a stop on the Blue Line, which will continue on as the East L.A. Line,” Jim Drago, MTA spokesman, said Thursday.

Construction is to include a six-mile stretch with eight new stations, he said. The line is scheduled to run from Union Station to Atlantic Boulevard via 1st Street to Lorena Street.

The MTA is doing an environmental impact study on the route, which would run underground through a tunnel in Boyle Heights. It would eventually extend farther east to about the 605 Freeway.

The award was part of a $127-million package of projects approved by the commission and is part of Gov. Gray Davis’ $6.8-billion, five-year plan to relieve congestion in the state. The commission approved $188 million for 31 projects last September.
